In times of a recruitment crisis We send home the foreign teachers!

It is hard to believe, that in amidst a major recruitment crisis in teaching, where numbers of people joining the profession is plummeting and the levels of teachers leaving the profession is soaring, the Government’s response is to threaten to deport foreign teachers (Non EU only) if they do not earn £35, 000 or more.

If we set aside the argument of a crisis in teacher numbers made by the various Teaching Unions (as they are biased in the eyes of the Government) and look at cold hard data & facts from independent sources, the figures are alarming:

Ofsted outlined the concern in 2014

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationnews/11285171/Ofsted-warns-of-looming-teacher-recruitment-crisis.html

The Independent Newspaper followed in 2015

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/teaching-profession-headed-for-crisis-as-numbers-continue-to-drop-and-working-lives-become-10203085.html

The BBC followed suit – also in 2015

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-34443359

And the Guardian added to the concerns in 2016:

http://www.theguardian.com/education/2016/mar/29/teachers-abroad-packing-recruitment-crisis-losing-staff

https://www.theguardian.com/money/2016/mar/12/eu-workers-deported-earning-less-35000-employees-americans-Australians

If we just check those sources again, they are:

  • Ofsted
  • BBC
  • independent Newspaper
  • Guardian Newspaper

Yet the Government response is startling:

Teachers from countries such as USA, Canada, New Zealand to name but a few will be forced to leave if they earn a salary under a certain cap, this being £35,00 or roughly M6 or UPS1 depending where you live in the country. This would by the Home Office’s own projections impact on 37% of primary teachers & 9% of secondary teachers.

The logic to this decision is flawed & comes to heart of freedom of movement of people, or restrictions depending on your country of origin.

It is a staggering piece of intended legislation, which reflects truly how disconnected our Government is with  the issues facing our profession.

From April people will be deported for earning less than £35,000

One way to reflect the opposition to this:

Is to sign the online petition to this Law:

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/118060

So far there have been over 100,00 signatory’s – and this is a clear way to send a signal to the Government that they need to complete yet another U Turn!

  2. I think it is fantastic what you are doing in your blog. We need to unite as teachers because what the stories have already done to education and what they are planning is and will be catastrophic. I hope people read your links and realise how they are detecting our educational system. The value that overseas teachers bring is immense and to devalue and diminish that is horrific.
Well done Paddy for bringing these issues to the forefront.

    1. Kirstie, Thanks for taking the time to follow the blog & comment on this topic. You are correct overseas teachers contributions are invaluable within our education system, and when viewed in the context of a teaching crisis the decision is scandalous.
