West Midlands Regional Conference Nov’16 & ‘lifting the cup’ aka winning a regional award!

Last weekend was the 2016 West Midlands regional conference to debate and discuss motions for National Conference, and I simply cannot believe it has been a year since the last regional event, this year has gone so quickly.

As such on Friday 4th November I headed over to Shakespeare’s home ‘Stratford Upon Avon’ to meet with colleagues from all over the region, (If you need a recap of the purpose of regional conferences see my blog regarding last years event).

The conference was to be held at the Crowne Plaza right by the river Avon – a very nice hotel!

Once settled into my room it was down to reception for pre conference drinks, the opportunity to meet friends and discuss the motions that we as region want to pursue.

Many of my colleagues from the Telford & Wrekin division also attended so it was a great opportunity to socialize and network, they had together travelled over on a mini bus (see below nicknamed the “Jolly Boys Outing”) arranged for all delegates from Telford, however as I was on supply and couldn’t make the pick up time, this was the first opportunity to catch up with them.

Chris Keates than gave pre conference meal and outlined the issues that have faced both the region and the teaching profession as a whole, Our General Sec. discussed the importance of unity in a time when other unions are merging and the need for clear communication as to what our Union stands for, she then presented awards for outstanding work in our region and I am proud to say I had been nominated and won an award for my work on ‘International Solidarity’ through my work on this blog and by directly linking students in Hungary together in a social enterprise project. The following morning the Conference began with delegates from all around the region discussing motions each Division had put forward.

Telford & Wrekin had tabled two motions asking our Union to explore the following:
  • The erroneous data and collection methods used within performance management processes
  • The exploitation of Supply Teachers

Member from the region spoke passionately on the topics and both were successful in being put forward for further discussion at National Conference.

It was a good natured, well structured conference that enabled everyone to contribute to the discussion and debate of the regions needs.

All of these pictures are taken and produced by a fantastically talented photographer Simon Boothe, who moves around the room throughout the event taking pictures, however if asked and notified he will not take pictures of those delegates of they prefer.

Finally a little more Bragg!
